Minister of Environment Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan has inaugurated the new drainage system developed in Holhudhoo, Noonu Atoll.

The drainage system was officially inaugurated in a special ceremony held on March 27. The ceremony was attended by Environment Minister Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan and Parliamentarian for Holhudhoo constituency Yoonus Ali.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Environment Minister expressed hope the new drainage system will resolve the flooding issues faced by the island. Noting Holhudhoo has always been prone to floods, the minister said the newly developed drainage system will reduce the damages incurred on households and private property due to flooding.

Speaking at the ceremony, Parliamentarian Yoonus Ali stated flooding has been a persistent problem for each of the 300 households in Holhudhoo, and thanked the administration for providing a solution for the problem. Noting a permanent solution can only be achieved by developing the roads, Yoonus said he is working with the administration on launching a project to develop the roads in Holhudhoo.

The drainage system in Holhudhoo was designed by Riyan Private Limited, and built by Canadian Crystalline Water India Limited. The project was commenced in July 2019 and completed in December 2020. The project cost USD 475,000.
