Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has commenced the upgrade of the old harbour in Hithadhoo, Addu City.
The project was officially inaugurated during a special ceremony held in Hithadhoo on April 2. The project was awarded to MTCC on April 1.
The project is to be undertaken by MTCC on a design-and-build basis. The project, which is valued at USD 3.4 million, is expected to be completed within two years.
Under the project, MTCC will construct an 800-metre sand-filled breakwater and 284-metre revetment in the harbour. The project also involves installation of 57 mooring rings, 14 harbour lights and 2 navigational lights as well as the construction of a 1,420 square-metre pavement with drainage. Furthermore, MTCC will also dredge the existing harbour basin to a depth of 3.5 metres below mean sea level, and the entrance channel to a depth of 4 metres below mean sea level.
