Registrar of Companies Mariyam Visam has stated special policies have been enacted to increase the participation of Maldivians in major industries in the country.
Speaking to PSM News, Visam said foreign investors have been restricted from investing in some Maldivian industries, in order to increase opportunities for Maldivians. As such, she said foreign investors are only allowed to invest in retail, wholesale trading, and construction, adding they can invest in other areas if partnered with Maldivian businesses.
Visam further stated the Ministry of Economic Development is working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to bring in more foreign investors by holding information sessions with friendly nations. She noted many foreign businesses are interested in investing in the Maldives. She added 250 investments have been registered for Foreign Direct Investment.
