Students of all grades return to schools after two months

Students of all grades in the Greater Male’ Region have returned to schools, after a two-month suspension of school sessions due to the latest surge of COVID-19 cases in the Maldives.

Classes for lower grades have been conducted online since early February due to a surge of COVID-19 cases in the Male’ area. However, following Health Protection Agency (HPA)’s decision to ease some of the restrictions placed in the capital, Ministry of Education has permitted the resumption of school sessions for all grades. Staff and students are required to wear masks at all times in school, and arrangements must be made in school to carry out frequent handwashing and temperature checks.

Schools were first closed in the Maldives due to COVID-19 on March 12 last year. Although, sessions for higher grades had resumed later last year, sessions for grade 6 and below had not resumed until January this year, with the start of the second semester of the ongoing academic year. However, school sessions for lower grades were once again suspended less than a month later, due to a new surge of COVID-19.
