Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has commenced Phase One of the harbour development project in Hulhumeedhoo, as part of the efforts to expand the Addu Fisheries Complex managed by Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO).
The harbour development project was launched by CEO of MTCC Adam Azim, Managing Director of MIFCO Ismail Fauzee, Mayor of Addu City Abdulla Sodiq and parliamentarians representing Addu City. MTCC said the development of Phase One includes reclaiming 1,788 cubic metres of land from Hulhumeedhoo, dredging of 471,380 cubic metres from the harbour and the construction of a 97-metre quay wall. The project is conducted at a cost of USD 4.4 million.
Speaking at the ceremony, Managing Director Fauzee noted fishermen from Addu travelled to Kooddoo in Gaafu Alifu Atoll with their catch before the establishment of Addu Fisheries Complex. He highlighted several benefits for the fishermen from the complex, adding the completion of the project will pave opportunities to export local fish products to outer markets.
According to MIFCO, Addu Fisheries Complex has the capacity to store 1,500 tonnes of fish.
