MTCC begins physical works of Meemu Airport

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has begun physical works of the development of Meemu Airport in Muli, Meemu Atoll.

The project to develop Meemu Airport was contracted to MTCC on February 28. The project was officially inaugurated by CEO of MTCC Adam Azim and Parliamentarian Ikram Hassan during a special ceremony held in Muli on April 6.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, CEO Adam Azim said MTCC has commenced several major infrastructure development projects in Meemu Atoll, making the company an important partner of the atoll’s development. He assured that MTCC will carry out the project without delays, in order to complete the project by the first quarter of next year.

Meemu Airport is being developed for domestic flight operations. As part of the project, an additional 14 hectares of land will be reclaimed in Muli for the airport. The project involves the construction of a 1200-metre runway, taxiway, apron and terminal.

Meemu Airport is being developed under the government’s policy to establish airports within 30 minutes of every inhabited island in the Maldives. Meemu Atoll is the only atoll which does not have access to an airport within 30 minutes of travel. The atoll has a population of 7,700 across 8 inhabited islands.
