Ministry of Economic Development has revealed consultancy has begun for the development project of Gan International Airport.
The economic ministry stated a team of consultants from Airports Authority of India (AAI) arrived at the airport on March 5. The consultants are carrying out a feasibility study before the start of the project.
The airport development project is being funded from the USD 800 million line of credit provided by the Export Import Bank of India. The economic ministry stated the airport development project includes construction of a new domestic terminal, control tower, fire station, as well as upgrading and renewing the current terminal, duty-free shops, and restaurants. The project also includes paving a new path that leads to the airport, as well as installing solar panels. The physical works of the project are set to begin later this year.
The government has stated the development of Gan International Airport is crucial to the development of the tourism industry and other businesses in the southern region of the Maldives.
