Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has stated there is no imminent danger due to the fuel boat that sank near Emboodhoo Falhu, Kaafu Atoll.
Speaking at a press conference, MNDF Coast Guard Commandant Colonel Mohamed Saleem said the Coast Guard is closely monitoring the situation of the fuel boat, although there is no imminent danger of a major fuel leak into the sea. Noting the area is frequently traversed by local vessels, Colonel Saleem said the Coast Guard is on alert for any further developments in relation to the incident.
Speaking at the same press conference, Director General of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Ibrahim Naeem said the fuel boat had been carrying 60,000 litres of diesel. Naeem said although this is not a massive amount, EPA will be closely monitoring any possible leak into the reefs and taking the necessary action.
MNDF received report of a fire on the fuel boat "Sea Star", operated by Bro Fuel Private Limited, in the afternoon of April 10. The boat subsequently sank near the lagoon of Emboodhoo.
