EPA warns of action against illegal fishing

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has warned of action over reports of illegal fishing in protected areas.

EPA stated it has been receiving complaints over fishermen violating the Environment Protection and Preservation Act of Maldives by catching and killing protected species in protected marine areas of the Maldives. EPA stated it is receiving reports of fishermen trespassing in protected areas for the purpose of catching sharks and has received evidence of illegal fishing in Ari Atoll.

According to the Environment Protection Act, the natural environment and its resources are a national heritage that needs to be protected and preserved for the benefit of future generations. The law states protection and preservation of the country's land and water resources, flora and fauna as well as the beaches, reefs, lagoons and all natural habitats are important for the sustainable development of the country.

The penalty for breaching the law ranges between USD 0.32 and USD 32 for minor offences, depending on the actual gravity of the offence. However, major offences carry a fine of not more than USD 6.5 million depending on the severity of the offence.
