Maafushi Health Centre has revealed 148 people have tested positive for COVID-19 from the island.
Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll was placed under monitoring on April 20 after the detection of active COVID-19 cases. Over 400 people have been identified as contacts of the positive cases in Maafushi.
Speaking to PSM News, Manager of Maafushi Health Centre Salman Ibrahim said 61 COVID-19 cases were reported within the past 24 hours. Salman added children and people of all ages are among those who tested positive, in addition to some high risk people. He said contact tracing is underway to determine the intensity of the spread. He noted sampling is also underway to control further spread.
Maafushi Health Centre and Maafushi Island Council have decided to impose further measures over the rapid increase in COVID-19 cases in the island. In this regard, water sports activities provided from guesthouses have been halted, dine-in services in café and restaurants have been temporarily prohibited with shops have been asked to provide delivery service to customers. In Maafushi, only students of grade 9 and 10 attending physical classes and all other grades have shifted to online classes.
Meanwhile, COVID-19 cases in Eydhafushi, Baa Atoll nears 100. The statistics from Baa Atoll Hospital showed that 49 new cases were reported within the past 24 hours, taking the total positive cases to 99.
Baa Atoll Hospital said among the positive cases, most are from people identified as contacts of the existing positive cases. The hospital revealed over 200 samples have been collected now.
Further, authorities in the island have advised to consult a doctor if showing symptoms and have advised to stay indoors unless necessary.
