President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has expressed concern over the rapidly worsening COVID-19 situation in India.
In a tweet, President Solih said he was saddened and concerned for India as the neighbouring country battles a new wave of COVID-19. He said the Maldives expresses its solidarity with the people of India, and is encouraged by the efforts undertaken by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian authorities to ease the situation.
India is currently experiencing its most devastating wave of COVID-19, incapacitating healthcare systems in several regions of the country. India has been reporting in excess of 300,000 new cases every day for the past week, while the daily number of deaths has risen to over 3,000. In total, India has reported more than 17.9 million cases and more than 200,000 deaths.
