HEOC expands operations following latest spike of COVID-19 in the Maldives

Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) has expanded its operations to take the necessary measures to control the latest spike of COVID-19 in the Maldives.

HEOC revealed it has received instruction from President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to expand and strengthen its day-to-day operations to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the country. As such, HEOC revealed high-level meetings will be held at the centre on a daily basis, led by Vice President Faisal Naseem and attended by ministers and senior state officials, to make key decisions on control measures. Furthermore, HEOC stated President Solih will also be conducting policy level meetings with the Emergency Coordination Committee every day.

COVID-19 situation ha been progressively getting worse in the Maldives within the past week, with the daily numbers breaking records during each of the last four days. Maldives reported over 700 cases in a single day for the first time on May 5, with 734 new cases. There are currently 7,109 active cases in the Maldives, including 198 admitted in hospitals or medical facilities. So far, 74 people have died from COVID-19 in the Maldives.
