Maldives continues to record high numbers of COVID-19 cases

Maldives continues to record extremely high numbers of COVID-19 cases, with 766 new cases reported on May 7.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has reported over 600 daily new cases for five consecutive days, with increasing numbers of positive cases both in the Greater Male' Region and the atolls. The latest update from HPA for May 7 shows 571 people tested positive for COVID-19 in the Greater Male' Region, 171 tested positive in inhabited islands, 23 people tested positive from resorts, and 1 person tested positive from industrial islands. The statistics show that there are 8,261 active cases and 205 patients receiving treatment in hospitals.

Meanwhile, COVID-19 deaths continue to rise sharply with another four deaths on May 7 taking the total to 83. Nine people have died from COVID-19 within the past three days.

The latest vaccination updates by HPA revealed a total of 126,790 people have received the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 300,438 have received the first dose. Maldives is currently administering Covishield and Sinopharm vaccines to the general public, while Pfizer vaccines are only given to registered individuals by appointment.
