Health Protection Agency (HPA) has stated three out of every five samples taken from the Greater Male' Region are testing positive for COVID-19.
HPA has recorded an average of 400 daily new cases in the Greater Male' Region in the past 30 days and over 700 daily new cases in the past week. HPA also reported a new record of over 1,000 new cases on May 9.
According to the latest update from HPA, 933 of the 1,091 new cases recorded on May 9 were from the Greater Male' Region. There are currently 9,423 active cases and 250 patients receiving treatment at hospitals. A total of 87 people have passed away due to COVID-19, out of which 14 died in the past week.
HPA has expressed concern over the rising number of positive cases being recorded from random samples and flu clinics, which shows an increase in the rate of spread of COVID-19 in the Greater Male' Region. Statistics from flu clinics reveal the number of patients testing positive for COVID-19 have increased fourfold in the past two weeks.
Furthermore, Spokesperson at the President's Office Mohamed Mabrook Azeez said 55% of health workers in the country are now working on COVID-19-related treatments and services, including specialists, medical officers, nurses, and community health workers.
