Rampant surge of COVID-19 continues with another 1,204 new cases

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has reported another 1,204 new cases of COVID-19 in the Maldives on May 10, setting a new record single-day tally once again.

The latest update from HPA for May 10 shows 961 people tested positive for COVID-19 in the Greater Male' Region, 234 tested positive in inhabited islands and 8 people tested positive from resorts. The statistics show that there are 10,376 active cases and 244 patients receiving treatment in hospitals. Meanwhile, COVID-19 deaths continue to rise sharply with another three deaths on May 10 taking the total to 87.

COVID-19 cases have been increasing sharply over the past few weeks, forcing HPA to announce new measures in several regions across the Maldives. As such, curfews have been announced in the Greater Male' Region, as well as Addu, Fuvahmulah and five other islands. Public and private offices have been asked to close with staff working from home, while travelling between islands for non-essential purposes has been banned.
