Ministry of Education has decided to extend the closure of schools in the Greater Male’ Region until May 20.
Schools in the Male’ region have been conducting its classes online since last week due to the surge of COVID-19 cases in the capital. The education ministry said schools will remain closed until at least May 20, as COVID-19 cases continue to increase across the Male’ area. The ministry said all classes will conducted online during this period, although students undertaking their O’Level examinations will be attending their exams as scheduled.
In addition, universities, colleges and training institutes have also been ordered to shift to online classes. Quran classes and tuition classes are also required to be conducted online.
Several measures are being taken across Maldives to contain the spread of COVID-19 amid the record surge in new cases. Maldives has set record numbers of new COVID-19 cases within this week, with single-day tallies soaring above 1,000 for the past four days. There are currently 13,784 active cases in the country, including 259 patients undergoing treatment at hospitals or medical facilities.
