Single day tally of COVID-19 hits new record with 2,194 new cases

The daily number of COVID-19 cases reported in the Maldives has hit a new record once again, with 2,194 new cases reported on May 20.

As per the update shared by Health Protection Agency (HPA), most of the cases reported on May 20 were from the Greater Male' Region, with 1,698 cases. In addition, 467 tested positive from atolls and 29 people tested positive from resorts.

With the latest update, the total number of COVID-19 cases reported in the Maldives has risen to 50,802. This includes 20,276 active cases, 30,403 recoveries and 114 deaths. There are currently 280 COVID-19 patients undergoing treatment in hospitals or medical facilities.

As per the vaccination updates shared by HPA, 467 people received the first dose of the vaccine and a further 1,644 people received the second dose of the vaccine on May 20. A total of 304,861 people have received at least one dose of the vaccine in the Maldives, while 151,079 people have received two doses.

The spread of COVID-19 has been worsening in the Maldives in the past few weeks, with record numbers of cases reported continuously. The government has tightened restrictions across the country in order to control the spread of the disease.
