Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) has revealed only high-risk contacts will be traced for COVID-19 cases in the Greater Male’ Region from now on, due to the large number of infections.
Speaking at a press conference, Aminath Aroosha from HEOC Contact Tracing stated the extremely large number of cases being reported on a daily basis is making it very difficult to carry out full contact tracing. Therefore, Aroosha said HEOC has decided to only trace high-risk contacts, who may be susceptible to the disease due to age or underlying conditions. She added this policy will only be followed for cases in the Greater Male’ Region.
Speaking further, Aroosha urged direct contacts of positive cases across the country to share their information to HEOC through email or the designated hotline. She called for the full support and cooperation of all in the efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the Maldives.
Maldives has seen a record surge of COVID-19 cases in the past few weeks. The situation in both the Greater Male’ Region and the atolls have progressively gotten worse, with deaths also beginning to rise sharply. Almost all hospital beds allocated for COVID-19 patients in the Male’ area are currently occupied.
