Ministry of Islamic Affairs has ordered the closure of mosques in the Greater Male' Region.
The ministry made the decision as part of the government's efforts to curb the spike in COVID-19 cases in the Maldives. The decision was made after discussions with the Supreme Council of Fatwa and religious scholars.
The ministry stated it has decided to close down mosques after noticing some mosques had ignored the guidelines on social distancing during congregations, and due to the increasing number of positive cases. The ministry advised prayer-goers to be diligent in praying and reading the Quran at home and to take the necessary health precautions.
The ministry had previously closed down mosques as part of last year's restrictions to control the COVID-19 pandemic.
