Government expresses concern over increasing breaches of curfew

Spokesperson at the President’s Office Mohamed Mabrook Azeez has expressed concern over the increased breaches of the curfew imposed in the Greater Male’ Region.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC), the spokesperson said the number of people fined for breaching the curfew is increasing, noting 913 people were fined within a 24-hour period between May 29-30. He noted 631 people were fined for going out without a permit during curfew hours, while over 200 people were fined for not wearing a mask.

The spokesperson noted it is essential that the public cooperate with the COVID-19 control measures in order to curb the spread of the disease and to help the country return to a normal situation. Acknowledging the major difficulties and challenges faced by families and households amid the COVID-19 restrictions, Mabrook said the control measures can only be effective with full compliance from the public. Therefore, he urged for the support and cooperation of the public in containing the spread of COVID-19.

Speaking at the press conference, Dr. Ibrahim Shiham from the Clinical Management Advisory Team of HEOC noted the COVID-19 positivity rate among people showing no symptoms is at an alarming 15-30%. Therefore, he urged all individuals to take the necessary safety precautions even if they do not show any symptoms, especially if they are coming into contact with high-risk individuals.

The COVID-19 situation in the Maldives has worsened significantly in May, with the country recording record numbers of cases and deaths during this month.
