Safety measures increased in prisons with surge in COVID-19 cases

Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) has revealed safety measures have been increased in prisons due to the latest surge of COVID-19 cases.

Speaking at a press conference held at HEOC, Spokesperson at the President’s Office Mohamed Mabrook Azeez said there are currently 186 active cases of COVID-19 in prisons, including 75 cases in Asseyri Prison and 111 cases in Male’ Prison. Mabrook said safety measures have been strengthened in prisons to control the spread of COVID-19, including frequent disinfection of prison cells and a revised cleaning schedule. He added the temperature of inmates are being checked on a daily basis, while any inmate showing COVID-19 symptoms are immediately isolated in a separate cell.

Speaking further, the spokesperson revealed medical units have been established in all prisons to attend to COVID-19 related medical emergencies. He added HEOC is regularly monitoring the conditions in prisons, in collaboration with the medical units established in prisons.
