DH-15 allocated for pregnant women needing treatment for COVID-19

Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) decides to allocate DH-15 facility in Dharumavantha Hospital for the treatment of pregnant women who require admission after testing positive for COVID-19.

Speaking at a press conference held at HEOC, Spokesperson at the President’s Office Mohamed Mabrook Azeez said the Hiyala Wing of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) will no longer be admitting COVID-19 positive pregnant women. Mabrook said all such patients will be admitted at DH-15 starting from June 13.

Hiyala Wing is the dedicated facility of IGMH for patients seeking obstetric and gynecological care. The latest surge of COVID-19 in the Maldives saw a significant increase in admissions at Ward A of Hiyala Wing, due to the large number of pregnant women testing positive for COVID-19. Some babies were delivered prematurely due to the critical condition of mothers. One such woman, aged 25, passed away on June 12, two weeks after her baby was delivered.

After a record number of COVID-19 cases in May, daily case numbers in the Maldives have started to decrease this month. As a result, active cases have dropped below 10,000, while the number of hospitalised patients has dropped below 100.
