Fuvahmulah City Council targeting construction of 500 housing units in 5 years

Fuvahmulah City Mayor Ismail Rafeeq has stated the city council targets to build 500 housing units in the city within the next 5 years.

Speaking to PSM News, Mayor Rafeeq said resolving the housing issues faced in Fuvahmulah is a key priority of the newly elected city council. As such, the mayor said housing projects of multiple ranges have been planned across different regions of the city, noting the target is to build 500 new housing units within the next five years.

The mayor further stated the policy of the city council is to provide flats with the option of distributing payment over a long period of time. He added the city council does not plan to issue housing plots to individuals, as the available land is limited.

Mayor Rafeeq further noted most of the 200 housing units constructed during the previous administration have been handed over to owners. The mayor said the city council is currently working on contracting a maintenance party for the new housing units, to address the issues relating to the water supply network and damages to the building.

While the Fuvahmulah city mayor announced plans to construct 500 new housing units, the government has also planned to construct 800 housing units in Fuvahmulah as part of the Fahi Dhiriulhun housing project undertaken in the southern atolls.
