Power interruptions expected during ongoing energisation of Greater Male’ power grid

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has stated power interruptions can be expected in the Greater Male’ Region until the end of the ongoing energisation works of the interconnected power grid established under the Greater Male’ Interconnection Project.

STELCO had earlier announced energisation of the power grid will be carried out from July 17-18 and July 21-22. STELCO has since revealed the energisation works would be carried forward to July 23-24, during which some power interruptions can be expected in Male’ and Hulhumale’. STELCO said it hopes to carry out the final testing stage of the project on July 24.

Under the Greater Male’ Interconnection Project, the power grids of Male’, Hulhumale’ and Hulhule’ have been interconnected with a 100MW interconnection cable running under the Sinamale’ Bridge. Under the project, four 95 MVA transformers have been placed in Male’ and Hulhumale’, along with two 8 MVA transformers in Hulhule’.

STELCO said the aim of the project is to sustainably provide electricity service in the Greater Male’ Region without interruptions. As such, the company said interconnection of the power grids would ensure that any problems encountered to the power grid of an individual region could be countered through the power grid of an interconnected region.
