One teacher for every nine students in Maldives: MBS

Maldives Bureau of Statistics (MBS) has revealed there is one teacher for every nine students in the country.

The statistics published by the bureau on World Teacher's Day show details on the teachers working in the country as of 2020. The statistics show 10,615 teachers were working in the Maldives in 2020 and that 72% were female teachers. It also shows there is one teacher for every nine students in the country, with one teacher for every seven students in the atolls and one teacher for every 12 students in the Greater Male' Region. The bureau of statistics also revealed 5,965 teachers were working in the atolls as of 2020, with 1,737 of them being foreign teachers.

The statistics for the Greater Male' Region show 2,536 Maldivian teachers and 377 foreign teachers were working at schools in the region. Around 82% of the teachers in the Greater Male' Region and 69% of teachers in the atolls are female teachers, meaning seven in ten teachers in the country are women. Additionally, 80% of teachers in the country are trained while 20% are untrained.

The bureau of statistics noted this year's World Teacher's Day focuses on the support teachers need to fully contribute to the recovery process, under the theme Teachers at the heart of education recovery.
