New stormwater management system to be developed in Male’

Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure begins efforts to develop a new stormwater management system in Male’ City.

The stormwater management system is to be developed under the Maldives Urban Development and Resilience Project. The project will utilise funds acquired through grants and loan assistance.

The planning ministry has issued an announcement seeking proposals for the design, consultancy and preparation of tender documents for the stormwater project. The aim of the consultancy is to carry out surveys to identify regions within Male’ that are prone to flooding and to design an efficient system that mitigates the risk of flooding and stores excess water for different uses.

The duration given for the design and consultancy works is 6 months. Interested parties are required to submit their Expression of Interest (EoI) to the planning ministry before October 31.

Flooding has been a long-standing, prominent issue in Male’, especially during the rainy season. Past efforts by authorities to mitigate flooding in Male’ have not been effective.
