President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has praised the Maldives National Football Team for its performance at the SAFF Championships 2021. He made the statement in a tweet after attending the fourth match played by the Maldives team in the SAFF Championship 2021.
President Solih was accompanied by Vice President Faisal Naseem and the Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed. After the match, the president said the team deserves high praise for the courage they displayed both on and off the field, even though they did not reach the finals. He added he is confident the team will continue to excel in the future.
The Maldives team faced off against the Indian National Team at the National Stadium on August 13. The Indian National Team won the game with a score of 3-1 and secured their place in the final to be played on October 16.
The Maldives had previously won the SAFF Championship cup twice in 2008 and 2018.
