Regional Airports Company Limited has revealed Hoarafushi Airport has become the first certified regional airport in the Maldives.

Speaking at the function held to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Hoarafushi Airport, Managing Director Mohamed Rizvi said the Regional Airports Company is working to certify other domestic airports as well. He said work is underway to determine whether airports in the country fit the international standards for regional airports and certify the seven airports under the jurisdiction of Regional Airports Company. He said Hoarafushi Airport has become the first certified airport and that work is underway to assess and certify the Fuvahmulah Airport.

Regional Airports Company stated Hoarafushi Airport is currently being operated during the daytime and that the lights needed for nighttime operations will be installed before the end of the year.

Also at the event, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula said the ministry and Civil Aviation Authority will provide assistance in establishing nighttime operations at Hoarafushi Airport.

Hoarafushi residents have said the airport has brought more job opportunities for Haa Alifu atoll and has made it easier for residents to take medical trips. Additionally, the government is currently conducting nine projects in Hoarafushi. The projects include establishing an ice plant, a bottling plant, the development of a football field, and upgrading the island hospital.
