Groundbreaking ceremony held for Vashafaru water and sewerage project

Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has held the groundbreaking ceremony for the water and sewerage project in Vashafaru, Haa Alifu Atoll.

The ceremony was inaugurated by Managing Director of MWSC Hassan Shah, Parliamentarian representing the Kelaa Constituency Ibrahim Shareef, President of Haa Alifu Atoll Council Moosa Shafeeq, and President of Vashafaru Island Council Ahmed Mueen.

Speaking at the ceremony, Parliamentarian Shareef praised President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's efforts to provide basic services to all citizens. The parliamentarian said the water and sewerage project is the largest project ever to be conducted in Vashafaru, with the project costing USD 32,000 per household. He highlighted the importance of a clean water supply system and said he expects the provision of basic services to continue despite the challenges the government has faced during the COVID-19 pandemic.


The parliamentarian highlighted other projects planned for Vashafaru, including installing ATMs, and building a waste management system and a futsal pitch. He said the island will also be provided with ambulance services and connected to the integrated high-speed ferry network.

MWSC has been tasked with completing the water and sewerage project in Vashafaru at a cost of USD 5 million. The state-owned company has completed 21% of the reverse osmosis (RO) facility. The scope of the project also includes building two RO plants, and placing a 295 cubic metre water collection tank, and one 850 cubic metre rainwater collection tanks.

The government contracted the project to MWSC in November 2020, to complete the project within 540 days.
