Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has commenced work to lay the pipeline for the water supply project in Feevah, Shaviyani Atoll.
The work was officially inaugurated at a ceremony attended by Parliamentarian for Milandhoo constutuency Ali Riza, Managing Director of MWSC Hassan Shah, President of Shaviyani Atoll Council Mohamed Siyam, and President of Feevah Island Council Ali Rasheed Hassan.
Speaking at the event, Parliamentarian Ali Riza said a clean water supply is one of the most important basic services that can be provided to citizens. He highlighted that an assessment in 2009 had shown that 80% of the water being used by Feevah residents were contaminated. He said he is pleased that the water supply project has commenced to fix this issue and thanked President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for prioritising the provision of basic services to citizens.
Also at the ceremony, Managing Director of MWSC Hassan Shah said the work to complete the project needs the full support of the Feevah residents. He also thanked President Solih for his decision to continue the water and sewerage services projects despite the financial challenges faced by the government during the COVID-19 pandemic.
MWSC has completed 32% of the reverse osmosis (RO) facility for the project, and will be working to connect the nine-kilometre water pipe network to 200 households. The scope of the project also includes building two RO plants and placing two 330 cubic metre water collection tanks as well as a 1,340 cubic metre rainwater collection tank.
MWSC is tasked with completing the project within 450 days at a cost of USD 3 million.
