Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has urged protestors to adhere to the COVID-19 related guidelines set by the Health Protection Agency (HPA).
HRCM is currently investigating complaints regarding the opposition protests held in the Greater Male' Region. The commission stated every citizen has the right to freedom of expression and to gather and carry out peaceful protests.
However, it stated that individuals should not create disorder at hospitals and public service centres and that they should exercise their rights lawfully. It also stated individuals should respect the rights of others and adhere to HPA guidelines when exercising their right to protest.
HRCM stated it is monitoring the opposition protests and a team from the commission met with an individual who was hospitalised following a complaint filed on January 7, adding that the case is being investigated.
Maldives Police Service (MPS) has stated that officers were assaulted and state property damaged at the opposition protests. MPS stated officers make arrests at protests and in various other situations in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations. As such, the police service stated officers make arrests during protests only when necessary, in accordance with the established laws.
