Housing projects announced in Hinnavaru and Manadhoo

Ministry of Finance has issued an announcement seeking contractors for the development of housing units in Hinnavaru, Lhaviyani Atoll and Manadhoo, Noonu Atoll.

The newly announced housing projects include the construction of 100 housing units in Hinnavaru and 40 housing units in Manadhoo. Bid submission for both projects are to be carried out on March 13. The projects in Hinnavaru and Manadhoo have been allocated bid securities of USD32,000 and USD13,000 respectively.

Hinnavaru has a land area of 22 hectares and a population of nearly 5,000. Residents of the island have faced housing difficulties for several years, with many of Hinnavaru citizens forced to rent houses in their own island. In 2009, 54 hectares of land were reclaimed in Hinnavaru to provide additional housing. However, no housing project had been carried out in the island.

Meanwhile, Manadhoo has a land area of 116 hectares and a population of 2,000. The island has a relatively large land area for its population.

The government is undertaking several housing projects across the country to resolve the housing difficulties faced by the population. As such, development of more than 2,000 housing units are ongoing in different stages across the country.
