Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna has stated the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has a major role to play in the efforts of the administration to achieve net zero emission by 2030.
Speaking at the ceremony held to launch the STELCO Powerhouse Managers Development Programme, Environment Minister Shauna acknowledged that the state utilities company has significantly increased its capacity in providing renewable energy. Noting the government spends about USD 400 million per year to import fuel, the minister stated the hike in oil prices triggered by recent developments in the world would increase the burden on the state budget. Therefore, she said it is important that the transition towards renewable energy is fast-tracked.
Speaking further, the environment minister highlighted the challenges faced in the transition towards renewable energy. However, she said a dedicated effort and determination would ensure the transition towards renewable energy is smooth and efficient. She added STELCO has a major role to play in achieving the government’s target of net zero emissions by 2030.
Minister Shauna further expressed the readiness of the government to provide all possible assistance to the state utilities company in expanding its renewable energy service. In this regard, she said the government will provide investments and develop the required infrastructure as needed by the STELCO.
The STELCO Powerhouse Managers Development Programme is a 4-day training programme conducted for managers of powerhouses operated by the company. The aim of the programme is to strengthen the administration and operations of the powerhouses and improve the services provided to the public. STELCO said the programme is attended by powerhouse managers from 30 islands.
