Results of waste management projects to be seen this year

Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna has stated positive results from the waste management projects will be seen this year.

Speaking at the Parliament of the Maldives, Minister Shauna said the government has completed major projects to solve the waste management issues in the Greater Male' Region. The minister said the project to develop a waste management centre in Vandhoo, Raa Atoll, is almost completed while funds have been allocated for the waste transfer station in the northern region of the country. She said previous efforts had not been made towards sustainable waste management and to implement waste management solutions that generate revenue.

Furthermore, Minister Shauna noted that major changes have already been made to the waste management system in the Greater Male' Region. She said construction work for the first phase of the Thilafushi waste management project has been completed and will be brought to operation this year. She added that the current waste management system in Thilafushi has also been largely improved with the elimination of smoke emissions.

She also highlighted the efforts to establish a 50-tonne waste-to-energy plant in Addu City as part of the government's commitment to sustainable waste management.
