Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has stated the shore protection projects in Dharavandhoo and Kendhoo in Baa Atoll have been stalled, as it has not received the environmental impact assessment (EIA) reports.
MTCC stated it has completed the surveys for the projects, which aim to solve the issues of erosion in both islands. As such, Dharavandhoo is experiencing erosion in the area leased for guesthouse businesses. Therefore, Dharavandhoo Island Council, business owners, and residents have raised their concerns over the issues.
Meanwhile, Kendhoo Island Council has stated that MTCC can begin fieldwork only after receiving the EIA report. Additionally, the council stated the island is experiencing erosion in all parts of the coastline and that the issues worsen during the rainy season.
Shore protection projects in other islands of Baa Atoll such as Thulhaadhoo and Dhonfanu are ongoing, and the Government of the Maldives is preparing to begin the shore protection project in Maalhos.
