Hatcheries to be built in four regions

Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI) has expressed interest in developing four regional fish hatcheries across the country.

Speaking to PSM News, Director General Shafia Naeem said hatcheries are needed to keep stock of products needed for the market, including grouper mariculture products. She said the Maldives mariculture sector is being developed under the Sustainable Fisheries Development Project of the World Bank.

Furthermore, Shafia said the MMRI is developing human resources for the mariculture sector and is working to build a training centre in Maniyafushi, Kaafu Atoll to conduct accredited courses related to mariculture.
