High-speed ferry service receives 234 passengers in one day

Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has stated that the recently commenced Raajje Transport Link (RTL) has become a popular service in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, with 234 passengers using the high-speed ferries in one day.

The RTL service commenced in Zone 1 of the National Public Ferry Network, which consists of Haa Alifu Atoll, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, and Shaviyani Atoll. As such, MTCC has begun the high-speed ferry service by connecting 13 islands in Haa Dhaalu Atoll via five routes. The company stated it is providing the ferry service free of charge until May 10 to make it easier for citizens travelling for the Eid al-Fitr holidays, and that reservations can be made for RTL ferries via the island councils.

Four ferries with a capacity of 50 passengers are operating on the RTL route. The ferries are air-conditioned and include USB outlets to charge mobile phones. Passengers using the RTL service will be allowed to bring one luggage and carry-on luggage.

MTCC has revealed the development of all ferry terminals under Zone 1 of the National Public Ferry Network will be completed by July and that 17 ferries will be used under the first phase. The ferry network is a large-scale project that introduces efficient, affordable, convenient, and sustainable passenger and cargo ferry services to all administrative islands of the country. In line with the Decentralisation Act, it aims to facilitate inclusive regional development by connecting people and services, accelerating social and economic growth, improving efficiency in the delivery of public services, as well as improving mobility and accessibility for all citizens in all areas of the nation. The proposed network classifies six central regions, as identified in the National Spatial Plan, and will provide two separate networks for passenger transit and movement of goods and services via cargo ferries within and in between the regions.
