Maafushi garbage landfill cleared for the first time

The large garbage landfill in Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll has been cleared for the first time.

The cleanup of the landfill was handed over to Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology. The project cost USD227 million, as per the ministry.

WAMCO cleared over 900 tonnes of waste from the landfill. The environment ministry revealed the waste removed from the landfill will be transferred to the Thilafushi Waste Facility for disposal. The ministry believes it is important to clean and empty the garbage landfill as Maafushi is an important industrial island in the region that operates numerous guesthouses.

Furthermore, the ministry revealed some garbage landfills in Male' City and some islands of Vaavu Atoll are also scheduled for cleanups.
