EPA issues fine for illegally building a harbour in Huruelhi

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a USD2 million fine to Huruelhi Investment Private Limited for developing a harbour in Hurelhi, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, without an environmental impact assessment (EIA).

In a statement, EPA said it has investigated a case of beach protection carried out on the island without completing the EIA process. According to the report sent to EPA, an area of ​​1,055 acres was excavated, 1,582cbm of sand was extracted and a 60m dock was developed. The work was carried out from July to September 2022.

EPA issued a fine of USD1,300 for not completing the EIA stage of the harbour work under the Beach Protection Project and USD2 million under the Penalties and Compensation for Environmental Damage Rules. The company was ordered on January 19 to pay the total amount of the fine within 30 days including public holidays.
