Male' Water and Sewerage Company Private Limited (MWSC) has signed agreements with relevant stakeholders to establish a decarbonised seawater desalination system using renewable energy.
The project agreement was signed between MWSC, Hitachi Zosen Corporation of Japan, and Renewable Energy Maldives (REM). The agreement was signed by Managing Director of MWSC Hassan Shah, Managing Director of Hitachi Zosen Corporation, Miyagi Taiyo, and Chairman of REM Dr. Ibrahim Nashid. The ceremony was attended by Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna and Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives Takeuchi Midori.
The agreement includes the installation and operation of a renewable energy water generation system in Gulhifalhu, Kaafu Atoll. The project also includes the installation of a reverse osmosis (RO) plant with a capacity of producing 500cbm of water per day, a 500kW solar PV system, and a 4,501kW per hour battery energy storage system.
The project is funded by Global Environment Centre Foundation together with private investment from Hitachi Zosen Corporation and REM. The successful implementation of the project will facilitate the production of water using 100% renewable energy in Gulhifalhu.
