The Maldives has discussed collaborating with Japan to diversify the production of value-added fish products in the country. The discussion took place during a meeting between Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam and Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives Takeuchi Midori.
Speaking to PSM News, Minister Shiyam highlighted that the meeting focused on ways to boost the fisheries sector in the Maldives, with an emphasis on Japan's potential assistance to the country. He mentioned that Ambassador Takeuchi noted the competitive pricing of Maldivian fish products in the international market, especially when exported as value-added fish products. He also noted the consistent support of the Japanese government for the development of the fisheries sector in the Maldives.
Additionally, Minister Shiyam revealed that the meeting addressed the need for training initiatives for individuals involved in the fisheries sector. He said that the government is currently collaborating with the Japanese government and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to tackle challenges related to fish handling and prevent deterioration before reaching processing facilities. He also said that the discussions included the prospect of implementing various training programmes in partnership with the Japanese government and universities, targeting those engaged in the fisheries sector.
