Gov't to publish law on number of vehicle registrations in 10 days

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has announced plans to amend regulations regarding vehicle registration limits and usage durations to alleviate challenges faced by local councils in managing vehicle numbers on islands. The amendments will be officially published in the Government Gazette within the next 10 days.

Under the Land Transport Act, local councils are responsible for determining the number of vehicles to be registered and their permitted usage periods within specific areas. However, Minister Ameen highlighted difficulties encountered by councils in enforcing the laws due to the complexity of the assessment criteria.

Speaking at the launch of a special programme on alleviating traffic congestion, Minister Ameen emphasised that the process of reviewing and publishing the regulations, initially projected to take two months, is now expected to conclude within the upcoming 10-day period. He expressed confidence that the legal amendments will address the issue of vehicle congestion.

The capital, Male' City, is particularly affected by traffic congestion, prompting the Male' City Council to prioritise vehicle restriction measures. Collaborative discussions with relevant authorities have commenced, aiming to revise vehicle limits and usage durations in the city within the next six months.
