President plans Gemanafushi land reclamation, harbor expansion

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to reclaim land in Gemanafushi and expand its harbour. He made the announcement at gathering held with residents of Gemanafushi, Gaafu Dhaalu Atolll, during his visit to the island as part of his ongoing tour of various islands in Addu City, Fuvahmulah City, and the North and South Huvadhoo Atolls.

Speaking at the gathering, President Dr. Muizzu emphasised the challenges faced by the current government in formulating the budget and highlighted the omission of important projects during the budget passing process in Parliament. Despite the challenges, he reassured that the government is diligently working to address the crucial needs of the islands according to priority.

Additionally, President Dr. Muizzu disclosed that a portion of the budget for the current year has been allocated for land reclamation in Gemanafushi, prioritising the welfare of the residents. He emphasised the significance of the project in addressing housing issues and fostering economic growth in the island.

Furthermore, he underscored the status of Gemanafushi as the largest fishing island in the Maldives and pledged to enhance and modernise its harbour facilities to alleviate the challenges faced by fishermen due to limited space. In addition, plans were outlined to pave and develop roads leading to key administrative and industrial areas of the island.

Moreover, President Dr. Muizzu announced plans to establish a multi-purpose hall at the island school for hosting various events and activities He also committed to appointing a gynecologist and a pediatrician at the local health centre to cater to the community's healthcare needs. Lastly, acknowledging the island's growing population, he pledged to inaugurate an ATM service in Gemanafushi.
