President says lack of MDP majority parliament’s support for government

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has asserted that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), as the majority parliamentary opposition in the 19th parliament, was not cooperating in state affairs to address residents' needs. He made these remarks while speaking at the inauguration of the campaign office of the ruling coalition candidate for the 20th parliamentary constituency of Vilufushi, Thaa Atoll.

This marks the first instance where President Dr. Muizzu has directly responded to statements made by the opposition during the campaign for the upcoming parliamentary elections.

President Muizzu initiated his speech by stating that MDP has made unrealistic pledges with the aim to secure the majority parliamentary position in the approaching 20th parliament. He further emphasized his inability to comprehend why MDP is only addressing commitments around the time of parliamentary elections.

President Muizzu stressed that although MDP promised to initiate land reclamation along with housing provision upon attaining their majority in the 20th parliament, they have not made any efforts to collaborate with state developmental projects while they still have majoriry.

Additionally, the President addressed and refuted claims of discontinuing projects initiated by the former ruling party MDP. He emphasised that no ongoing projects have been halted, and any terminated projects were initiated by MDP.

President Mohamed Muizzu attested that the projects initiated by MDP were solely for the purpose of gaining undeserved advantages and were carried out at a significantly slower pace. He underscored that there is no absolute reason for the present administration to be accused of terminating projects.

Following the inauguration ceremony, President Muizzu visited the inauguration of the campaign office of the ruling coalition candidate for the 20th parliamentary constituency of North-Thinadhoo. During the event, he strongly criticised the work of the current parliament. Additionally, First Lady Saijidha Mohamed and cabinet ministers attended the ceremony.

Meanwhile, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has initiated a door-to-door drive with the intent to support ruling coalition candidates in the forthcoming 20th parliamentary elections.
