The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has affirmed that the party will continuously strive to hold the government accountable for its actions. The remarks were made in a statement issued by the party, following the loss faced by the party in the parliamentary elections held on April 21.
The statement released congratulated all the candidates of MDP who won seats of the Parliament, in addition to congratulating other candidates for their accomplishments. In the statement, MDP urges the newly elected Parliament to follow democratic practices and work for the betterment and sustainable development of the nation. It further highlighted that the biggest responsibility of the Parliament is to ensure it is accountable and transparent. The party affirmed that it would exert maximum effort to ensure the government's accountability given any circumstances.
Following the preliminary results of the parliamentary election, MDP suffered a major defeat, with the party losing numerous seats it has been defending for years. The preliminary results indicate that the party was only able to secure around 12 seats of the Parliament.
