Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has stated that the main ruling People's National Congress (PNC) intends to refrain from leveraging its parliamentary majority for undue advantage.
Speaking to PSM News, Minister Shiyam, who also serves as Vice President of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), highlighted the previous government's failure to effectively serve the public despite holding a super majority in Parliament. He also pointed out that even after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assumed office, the Parliament, dominated by the MDP, continued to impede governmental efforts.
Additionally, Minister Shiyam expressed the challenges faced by PPM and PNC as minority parties in the 19th Parliament, citing instances of difficulty and disrespect from the majority members during debates and bill introductions. He, however, assured that such adversarial dynamics will not persist in the 20th Parliament under President Dr. Muizzu's leadership.
Furthermore, Minister Shiyam said that the upcoming 20th Parliament will foster an atmosphere of mutual respect between the majority and minority factions. He underscored the people's mandate for a majority government and pledged parliamentary cooperation in fulfilling President Dr. Muizzu's commitments.
