The Ministry of Tourism has revealed that the total number of tourist arrivals to the Maldives has reached to 1.1 million. It is a 9.5% increase compared to the tourist arrival during the same period last year.
The daily updates report released by the ministry indicates that the tourists' arrival has continued to increase after experiencing a declining rate in the arrival. According to the report f, the number of tourist arrivals each month was as follows: 192,385 in January, 217,392 in February, 194,227 in March, 168,366 in April, 119,875 in May, and 123,284 in June and 120,518 till July 23.
The statistics shows that the average tourists arriving daily has decreased during May and June. As such, an average of 3,867 tourists visited the Maldives daily in May, while an average of 4,109 tourists visited daily in June. However, the report indicates that the average daily tourists' arrival has increased, and is surfacing above 5,000.
The report also highlights that Chinese tourists made up the largest portion of arrivals so far this year, with 147,241 visitors. Following China, the top sources of tourists included Russia with 120,366 visitors, the United Kingdom with 101,402 arrivals, Italy with 85,014 visitors, and Germany with 84,345 arrivals.
On average, tourists are staying in the Maldives for approximately seven days, with an average of 5,240 visitors arriving daily. This consistent influx has motivated the government to set an ambitious target of attracting two million tourists by the end of the year. The government reports that it has already achieved 50% of this target within the first four months of 2024 and is actively working towards reaching this goal.
