National Development Masterplan aims to ensure project continuity

Spokesperson at the President’s Office Heena Waleed has affirmed that the new 20-year National Development Masterplan will ensure the completion of major projects despite potential changes in government. Her comments followed President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s announcement of the plan.

At a press conference, Heena highlighted the necessity of a long-term development strategy for the Maldives, a need that was emphasised during the presidential campaign and through President Muizzu’s current trips around the country. She noted that the National Development Plan is set to be completed within a year, with plans for broad consultations involving the public, political parties, and experts from various fields.

Heena pointed out that new governments often disrupt ongoing projects, which adversely affects the public. She stressed that this plan is crucial for achieving sustainable development and reducing such disruptions. Furthermore, she mentioned that the plan will take into account the views of opposition parties, reflecting a commitment to democratic principles.

The government’s decision to develop the National Development Plan with legal authority, recently approved by the Cabinet, represents a significant step towards delivering on a key presidential promise and ensuring its effectiveness over the long term.
