Male’, Villimale’ Road Development Project to Begin This Year

The road development project in both Male’ and Villimale’ will begin before the end of the year, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said.

Speaking during a press conference on Saturday, President Dr Muizzu said along with housing, the current state of the roads in the capital remains one of the biggest concerns of the public.

Government signed an agreement with the Chinese Government to build the roads of Male’ and Villimale’ during President Dr Muizzu’s visit to China in January this year. Since then, a team of technical experts from China has visited the Maldives to conduct research, which concluded in November last year.

The government has also awarded a project to widen and modernise the north side of the outer ring road of the Male’ to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Limited (MTCC).

The President said MTCC is currently conducting the required surveys, expressing confidence that the project will kick-off within the next month.

The project will develop an 830 metre area from the MTCC ferry terminal to the local market. The project will include the widening of the road by extending the key wall, installation of drainage systems, sidewalks, road markings and sign boards.

The area between the MTCC Henveiru Ferry Terminal and the Local Market is not part of the road development initiative under Chinese grant assistance which has prompted the initiation of the project under State funds.
