To commemorate National Tourism Day, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, in collaboration with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), successfully spearheaded the "Coastal Cleanup 2025" initiative, attracting an estimated 3,000 participants in Hulhumale’ alone.
The extensive event, aimed at raising public awareness on critical environmental issues, combating climate change, and maintaining the cleanliness of Hulhumale's coastal areas, saw enthusiastic involvement from various government ministries, companies, NGOs, and schools, with similar activities concurrently conducted across several islands and resorts nationwide.
The flagship cleanup in Hulhumale’ was graced by the presence of high-ranking officials, including the Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim alongside the Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture, and Heritage, Adam Naseer Ibrahim.
Volunteers diligently cleaned beaches, lagoon, along with undertaking vital coral planting activities in the channel area where Hulhumale's two phases converge. This comprehensive effort highlighted a strong national commitment to preserving the Maldives' pristine natural environment.
Underscoring the inseparable link between the environment and the nation's primary tourism industry, HDC asserted that protecting and preserving the beaches is essential to tourism promotion. This sentiment formed a core objective behind the national-level event, which sought not only to enhance the cleanliness of Hulhumale's coastline but also to cultivate a broader public understanding of environmental stewardship and proactive climate action.
Celebrated annually on 3 October, National Tourism Day marks a significant milestone in Maldivian history – the opening of the country's first resort.
